What is word study?
“Word study involves focused attention to words and word elements, with the goal of helping children become excellent readers and writers. Word study is defined as an instructional process that involves the learner in an investigation of words” (Fountas & Pinnell 1998). “While important, phonics, spelling, word analysis, and grammar usage strategies are not the end goal of literacy education. Their importance lies in their contribution to reading and writing continuous text. The more students can solve words, derive the meaning of words, spell words, and parse language syntax rapidly, fluently, and unconsciously the more likely they are to read and write with competence and ease“ (Fountas & Pinnell 2017).
High Frequency Words
Third graders are continuously adding to the body of high frequency words they can read and write; in the process, they develop systems for learning words rapidly. In third grade, they continue the process of studying high frequency words and begin to monitor their own learning. High frequency words are learned in many components of the language and literacy framework, especially shared/interactive writing and guided reading.
A Note about our High Frequency Words: Since there are 300 high frequency words in 3rd grade, it will look different than the 100 they had in 2nd grade. Students will still be introduced to new high frequency words each week so that we can talk about the spelling patterns, practice the phonics patterns, and write them in our word wall notebooks. Some of these words will be used in phonics practice, and some will be focused on as the weekly high frequency words (this is decided based on information from the pre-test and difficulty of the words). They will go over 5-6 new words per week and they will be posted for 2 weeks before moving to the word wall. Since not all students need to practice each word, they will not be tested on these weekly words as they were last year. Instead, they will be tested on their differentiated Buddy Study words. This ensures that students are being met at their level and not spending the bulk of their word practice time practicing words they have already mastered. Once students have mastered all of the 3rd grade high frequency words, they choose content words and higher-level words.
A Note about Buddy Study: Students were tested on all 300 high frequency words at the beginning of the year. These words are being used for their Buddy Study differentiated practice. They choose 5 words per week from their differentiated word list and they practice their words throughout the week. Students work with their Buddy Study partners and practice their differentiated words through different activities until they are tested on them. They practice these words until they master them. This spelling practice is what will be tested and and used to assess students on their grade-appropriate spelling patterns. You will see their words written in their assignment notebooks and completed packets come home when they are finished practicing those words.
