Fiction Unit
Fiction Unit Focuses:
•Types of fiction (subgenres): Mystery, realistic fiction, historical fiction, fantasy, literary nonfiction, play/drama, myth, traditional literature (folktales, fables, fairy tales)
•Figurative Language/Expressions: personification, idioms, similes, metaphors
•Comprehension & Textual Support/Evidence: finding evidence in the story to support an answer to a question
•Word Solving in Context (Definition/Meaning): solving the meaning of a word by reading the context/words around it
•Author’s Main Message/Theme/Central Message: determining the message/meaning of the story (what the story is mainly about)
•Character Traits: describing a character based on evidence in the story
•Written Response: using the RACES (Restate question, Answer question, Cite evidence, Explain, Summarize) strategy to answer a question in writing based on the text
